There are few other regions where this phrase applies so well. Perl lies right at the borderless crossroads of Germany, France and Luxembourg, stretching from the beautiful Moselle valley to the vast fields of the Saargau. Right next to Perl is the European heritage site of Schengen in Luxembourg. Since 1985, our neighbouring town has been synonymous with an open Europe without border controls. Under the title ‘Schengen is alive’, the European Centre provides information all year round on the famous agreement and on developments in Europe.

The municipality of Perl occupies a special position within the district of Merzig-Wadern – the ‘green circle’ – but not only in geographical terms. Due to its border location and proximity to the Luxembourg labour market, Perl has, bucking the general trend, recorded steady population growth for years. From 1998 to the present day, population growth of around 40 per cent has been documented. This exceptional growth is mainly due to the arrival of new residents. Foreign nationals currently account for over 35 per cent of the municipality’s population, representing more than 60 different nationalities. This intercultural environment, with two national borders and a wide range of cultural and linguistic influences, also shapes public life.

As well as the town’s general development, tourism is also a key focus. Numerous cycle paths and walking trails through meadows, forests and vineyards allow visitors to explore the ‘Three Borders’ region – which has been borderless for over 30 years. As the gateway to the premium Saar-Hunsrück hiking region, Perl ranks among Europe’s top hiking destinations. The certified long-distance hiking trails ‘Saar-Hunsrück-Steig’ and ‘Moselsteig’ also begin in Perl.

Nennig is home to the largest and best-preserved Roman mosaic north of the Alps. Berg Castle, Nell Park with its Baroque garden and the Roman villa at Borg are also of particular interest. The latter was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and excavated from 1987 onwards. Today, the complex – comprising a manor house, residential and farm buildings, villa baths, a tavern and gardens – has been faithfully reconstructed. The museum displays original artefacts and replicas. In the Roman tavern, visitors can still sample the culinary arts of the ancient Romans. Excellent restaurants and vineyards, welcoming hotels and inns, as well as a wide range of cultural and leisure activities, make a visit to Perl an unforgettable experience.
